TYR - ERIC THE RED
TUTL
METAL TO INFINITY
Want some unique or original music? Well, in that case i can lead you to a band hailing from the Faeroe Islands (somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean). Name of the band is Tyrand "Eric The Red", released in June 2003 is their second effort so far. I'm still impressed by the results of the album and it was not that easy for me to accept their style the first time i've met the songs . Reason why? Very simple to explane, Tyr is so unique that it will takes you by the throat when you hear these guys at first, believe me.
Get rid of all the nowadays cliche kinda Metal bands and try something new, something special, something real good called Tyr! They've released a first album in Jan. 2002 entitled "How Far was Asgaard" which i haven't heard but one thing is for sure so i can't tell a damn word about that album, so i'll focus myself on their latest one "Eric The Red". It's a kind of melodic Proggressive / Heavy Metal with epic, doom, pagan and last but not unimportant for the guys i guess, alot of folk influences. All these different types of music in one is pretty unusual in our world of Metal today but i can assure you, try to check these guys out and if you don't like them, something must be very wrong with you.
All the songs are played with alot of inspiration, talent and strength with English lyrics but also a few tracks in a language i absolutely don't understand a word of it, is this Faeroese or Danish? Their music takes you away on a trip to ancient times, through life and death, from Midgaard to Asgaard, to Valhalla. Excellent, clean but very original vocals surrounded by a guitar player able to takes your breath away due to all the technical skills he has in his fingers. The bass lines, drum works, the bombastic folk influences, etc, etc,...this is the most unexpected, unusual, original and unique album i've heard the last few years.
It's not a album pure Metal minded to the bone, but it differs from many others, played with so much feeling / energy and that's what i'm looking for. Pagan / epic / heavy metal and a dose of folk are the main elements awaiting for all those who feel the need to check out a great band called TYR. www.tyr.net Excellent work!! MY POINTS: 90 / 100
TYR - ERIC THE RED
METAL TO INFINITY
Above this page you'll find the original version of TYR's "Eric The Red", released in 2003. The only way to buy this great album was purchasing via the band's website. I wrote the review shortly after receiving the original version from the band themselves (as you can read above) back then. Last week, a promotion company (www.hardlifepromotion.nl / Mike De Coene) sent me the same album, this time released through Austria / USA based Napalm Records which makes it a lot easier to find the album in your local record store both national and international.
Living in Europe or in the US, no problem at all, walk the streets on the hunt for TYR's shining bright, unique album is rule number one. The original version contains 10 songs, well via Napalm Records you can get the same plus two bonus tracks "Gods Of War" and "Hail To The Hammer". Totally satisfaction hits me too because these two new songs are (as usual) unique, great, just fantastic. Tyr is a very original band who likes to walk the origianal paths of making Metal music. You've got the hear it to belief how good they really are.
What can i say: thumbs up to the guys of Napalm Records for giving the opportunity to buy "Eric The Red" in your next doors record store. By this way, Tyr's name will be recognized more and more. They need it, they deserve it!! www.napalmrecords.com
