TEMPTING TRAGEDY - CARPE NOCTEM

INDEPENDENT

METAL TO INFINITY

Tempting Tragedy is a band consisting of 5 members from eastern Canada. Originally a side project for aspiring musician Marty Surette, who started recording songs as many do on pc. The band has evolved since its primitive inception in 2004 into a full powerhouse 5-piece unit in 2006. Now 2007, they decided it was time to showcase their abilities with the release of their full-length album ''Carpe Noctem'. About there debut, they say that the album is a rock-solid melancholic machine of death, pain and obsession, with an excess of influences ranging from classic to  modern, from Maiden to Sentenced...

Tempting Tragedy is described as Gothic Metal. I'm not quite sure how to describe their music but it certainly doesn't impress me. The music itself isn’t bad but the vocals are a disappointment and rather boring at times.  The singers voice is a bit too smooth to do the songs justice. They do have some good riffs in there and the solo’s are ok aswell. Also the synthesizer has been used in the right way and places but I do not see their music becoming a big hit. The second number is the only number that stands out and is by far the best song on this CD.. 'Mr Hyde' isn't too bad either but the refrain brings the song down.

There is still a lot of work to be done for this band. Production too could have been better. It sounds too much like a demo which doesn't do any of the songs justice.  I feel this output ''Carpe Noctem'' containing 13 numbers has been brought out much too soon for this Canadian band. My rating 59/100 (review by Metalandy)
