INTERVIEW

A Talk With DANIELLE LANGLOIS
METAL TO INFINITY
Thanks for your time in the first place! Some more information about yourself would be great.
No, thank you for giving us a chance to get closer to your readers. By the way, I'm Danielle the singer of Potion13. Within band, it'sone of my assignment to answer interview and being french, I hope my english is not too bad!!
Who are the other members and where exactly do you come from?
We all live in the city of Montreal, in Quebec (Canada.)
Danielle Langlois: vocals

Annie Leclerc: drums

Nathalie Baril: bass

Brian Harps: guitar

Did you find these musicians by audition?
I met Annie 4 years ago auditionning for her "allgirl band" as their bass player. We became friends in no time!! We're the only 2 members remaining from that formation. Brian has joined Annie and me, in 2002. I had played with Brian before in a few bands. I took the singer's job and St鰨anie Masson was the bass player at this time.
In december 2003 there was achange in the line-up. In spring 2004 Nathalie Baril joined Potion 13, afterseen Annie at her Drummer Kombat (they've played together before), and she was what we were looking for! Since then, all goes well! The chemistry is perfect in the band!! We played a few gigs already and it was a lot of fun!! The fans like her very much too.
How's the Canadian Metal scene at the moment?
It's more an underground scene than a french one. Not too many band sing in french cause they figured that they have more chance for an "internationnal career" in english. But we're glad to be a french band cause a lot of people all over the world like our songs anyway even if it's in French Quebec style. And people from Qu颥c are very happy about it too. We got a lot of encouragement for our guts!! We're proud of our heritage and we love to share it with the world!
What are you doing for a living and why do you play Metal?
We all have a day job, for instance, Brian build furniture and yes, he built his own guitar too! In the music industry, it's getting harder and harder to make a living out of it. Being independant, our profit goes mostly into promoting the band. We hope one day to make the band our full time job and we're working hard to make it happen. We play metal cause that's what we like, we love! It's more fun to play what comes naturally! It's easier to let yourself go when you enjoy what you do!

Actually, what does the term Heavy Metal to you?
Heavy Metal is a great feeling, full of energies and emotions. It's also the crowd, very generous. It's a kind of community that stick together against the "main stream" of the music industry. And we are proud to be part of it!
Things you're interested besides music is.
Wanting to succed in music and being independant it doesn't live much time for anything else! But, art, movies, video games, and getting in touch with nature once in a while are about the things we do beside music.
Are you fascinated by some special things in life?
The unexplained, what the eyes don't see, the untouchable, the magic of destiny...
When you're busy making new songs or while walking the stage. How does it feel?
Fuckin Excellent! The ultimate rush!! Total happyness!!! We live to playand when we're on stage...there's nothing like it! We love to create too, it's a feeling of accomplishment when you write a song and people enjoy it! It makes you feel good inside, like a cool beer on a hot summer day! Hum!!!!

Is Metal music very important to you or just playing with the band and having fun?
Our first goal is to have fun while playing otherwise it would'nt be worth it. But we do it seriously. We try to be as professionnal as we can all the time. We love to see the croud headbanging with us. It's a great feeling! We enjoy the relationship we have with our fans!!!
What kinda band is Potion 13 and what do you want to accomplish with?
The kind of band that wants to turn every show into a great party! We promote getting together, to have fun in life, have a good beer with friends while listening to music.
We're a band that want to succed by working together toward the same goal. Everybody in the band does it share to make it happen! We're more than a team, it's more like a family.
When did you first get the idea of putting up a band like yours?
Destiny made it happen, I guess?. And it came to us...A band or a song is like a potion, a mix of ingredients put together for acommon purpose. 1 guy + 3 girls= potion 13

Please guide me through all the Potion 13 releases so far?
We had an album out (10 songs), in november 2002, it's call "Porte-bonheur" (Lucky charm). It's spinning, now, all over the world, beyond our expectation! It made us very happy to see that our language has no frontier. We'll be on 2 compilation this year. One in Ontario and one in Qu颥c.
Can you explain the music and lyrics for the songs you've made so far?
The music is a mix of all our influences that come from all kind of metal. We try to be all involved as much as possible, and everybody in the band has to like the song or we work some more on it, change what's wrong or we don't use it. It's important to play what you like, for it to sound good.
For the lyrics, some are sad, some are mad, some are plain funny like Camping Ste-Madeleine. But I write mostly about what I know and what makes me wonder. Being fascinated by the power within me and all around us, you can expect to hear about it in my song too.

So what's next....a full length album?
We're writing now, new songs, toward a second album. But this time we might go with a label cause the demand is growing fast and it's getting harder to keep up with everything. Will see what destiny brings us...
Name a few of you all time Metal faves please.
Iron Maiden, Dio, Metallica, King Diamond, Black Sabbath, Cannibal Corpse, Massacre, Deicide, Hanker, Metal Church, Queensryche, Angra,...there's so many good bands!!!!!
How was your summer vacation? Did you played some live performances or not?
We've been playing all summer, took a few days off, here and there and we worked on new songs. No time for big vacation...
What about the near future? Playing as much Metal as possible I suppose.
For sure!! Play as much as possible!!! And keep on working on new stuff. I'm very excited about the new riffs that Brian has put together, the essence of this one is very particular. I'm looking forward to finish it with all the rest of the band.
Well, that's it and I would thank you very much indeed for your precious time. If you want something to say to the Metal To Infinity readers before leaving, take your change right here and now.
